Watching IPTV directly on your Smart TV is the simplest setup there is: no extra boxes, no extra remotes and no extra cables. If your TV was made in the last several years, there's a good chance it can run an IPTV player app straight from its built-in app store.

This guide explains how to check whether your TV is compatible, how to install and set up a player app on the most common TV platforms, how to tune your picture settings and what to do if your TV doesn't support IPTV apps.

Step 1: Find out which platform your TV uses

Smart TVs run different operating systems depending on the brand. Knowing yours tells you which app store to use.

TV brand Platform App store
Samsung Tizen Samsung Apps / Smart Hub
LG webOS LG Content Store
Sony, TCL, Hisense and others Android TV / Google TV Google Play Store
Many budget brands Varies Check the TV's home screen

To check, open your TV's settings and look for About or Support → About this TV. The model number and software version are listed there.

Step 2: Prepare your TV

Update the software

In settings, find Software Update (Samsung), Check for Updates (LG) or System → About → System update (Android TV / Google TV). Newer software improves video playback and app compatibility.

Connect to the internet

If your router is close to the TV, use an Ethernet cable. It's the most reliable way to avoid buffering. Otherwise, connect to your router's 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. Not sure how much speed you need? Read our guide to internet speed for 4K streaming.

Step 3: Install a player app

IPTV services work through a player app, which displays your channels and the TV guide.

  1. Open your TV's app store.
  2. Search for "IPTV player".
  3. Choose a well-reviewed app that supports Xtream Codes or M3U playlists.
  4. Install it and open it from your apps list.

App availability varies by TV model and region. If you're not sure which app to choose, contact our support team with your TV model number and we'll recommend one.

A note on Samsung and LG

Samsung and LG app stores are more limited than Google Play. Some player apps on these platforms ask you to activate the device on a website using a code shown on screen; follow the on-screen instructions. If you can't find a suitable app, see the options at the end of this guide.

Step 4: Sign in

Open the player app and choose how to add your subscription:

  • Xtream Codes login: enter the server URL, username and password.
  • M3U playlist: enter the playlist link.

You'll find both in your activation message. Enter them exactly as written; they're case-sensitive. Some apps let you add the login from your phone or a web page instead of typing with the remote, which is much quicker.

The app then downloads your channel list and the TV guide. The first load can take a minute.

Step 5: Set up your channels

Before you start watching, spend two minutes organizing:

  • Add your favorite channels to a favorites list.
  • Hide categories you don't watch.
  • Open the TV guide to make sure the times match your time zone.

Our EPG guide tips explain each of these in detail.

Get the best picture on your TV

Choose the right picture mode

Most TVs ship in a bright "Vivid" or "Dynamic" mode that looks good in a store but isn't accurate at home. Try Movie, Cinema or Filmmaker mode for films, and Standard for everyday viewing.

Turn off motion smoothing for sports

Features such as "Auto Motion Plus", "TruMotion" or "Motionflow" can create a "soap opera" look and add delay. Turning them off often gives a cleaner picture with live content.

Check the player's decoder setting

In the player app's settings, set the video decoder to hardware if that option exists. Hardware decoding is smoother and uses less power.

Restart the TV occasionally

Smart TVs often go into standby instead of fully turning off. Unplugging the TV for 30 seconds once a week clears memory and can fix sluggish apps.

If your TV doesn't support IPTV apps

Older Smart TVs, or models with limited app stores, may not have a suitable player. You have two easy options:

  1. Add a streaming stick. A Fire TV Stick or a Google TV device plugs into an HDMI port and gives you full app support. Follow our Fire TV Stick setup guide.
  2. Use a MAG box. A dedicated set-top box connects through a portal URL and works like a cable receiver. See our MAG box setup page.

You'll find step-by-step instructions for every device on our devices page, including the dedicated Smart TV setup guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch on my Smart TV and phone at the same time?

Yes, if your plan includes two or more connections. Choose the number of screens on our pricing page.

Do I need a 4K TV?

No. IPTV works on any HD Smart TV. A 4K TV lets you enjoy 4K channels and titles when your connection allows it.

Why does my TV app look different from the screenshots I've seen?

Each player app has its own design, and apps differ between TV platforms. The basics (channels, guide and favorites) work the same way.

My TV says the app isn't available in my region. What now?

Try another player app, or use a streaming stick, which usually has a wider selection of apps. Our support team can help you choose.
