How to Set Up IPTV on Android

Android phones, tablets and Android TV boxes can all play your subscription through a player app from the Google Play Store. That means you can watch on the couch, in the kitchen or on the go with the same login.

This guide covers installing a player, signing in, saving mobile data and sending the picture to your TV.

What you need

  • An Android phone, tablet or TV box running a recent version of Android
  • A Google account for the Play Store
  • Wi-Fi or a good 4G/5G signal
  • Your login details from your activation message

Step-by-step setup

  1. 1

Update Android and the Play Store

Open Settings → System → Software update and install any updates. Updated devices handle video codecs better and run newer apps.

  2. 2

    Install a player app

Open the Google Play Store, search for “IPTV player” and choose a well-reviewed app that supports Xtream Codes or M3U playlists. Check recent reviews for your device type — phone, tablet or TV box.

  3. 3

    Add your subscription

Your activation message contains everything you need: either an Xtream Codes login (server URL, username and password) or an M3U playlist link. Enter the details exactly as written — they are case-sensitive, and an extra space at the end is enough to cause a login error. On a phone, copying and pasting from the activation message avoids typing mistakes.

  4. 4

    Allow background playback

Open Settings → Apps → your player → Battery and set it to Unrestricted. This stops Android from pausing streams to save power.

  5. 5

Pick your quality and start watching

On Wi-Fi, choose FHD or 4K channels. On cellular data, HD or SD saves data while still looking good on a small screen.

Choosing a good player app

Check the login types

Make sure the app supports Xtream Codes logins, M3U playlists, or both. Xtream Codes usually loads the TV guide and categories automatically, so it is the easier option when available.

Read recent reviews

Look at reviews from the last few months and from people using the same kind of device. Apps change often, and an app that works well on phones may behave differently on tablets or TV boxes.

Look for a built-in TV guide and favorites

A good player shows the electronic program guide, lets you create favorites lists and remembers the last channel you watched. Our support team can suggest an app that works well with your subscription.

Watching on the big screen

Cast to your TV

Many player apps include a Cast button. Tap it to send the picture to a Chromecast or Google TV device on the same Wi-Fi network.

Use an Android TV box

Android TV boxes run the same apps with a remote-friendly layout. Connect the box with Ethernet for the most stable picture.

Save mobile data

HD streaming uses roughly 1–3 GB per hour. Use Wi-Fi whenever you can and enable any data-saver option in the player.

Troubleshooting

Playback stops when the screen turns off

Set the player's battery usage to Unrestricted and turn on the app's background or picture-in-picture playback option if it has one.

Sound but no picture

Switch the player's decoder between hardware and software in its settings. One of them usually works better on a given device.

Frequent buffering

Move closer to the router, switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or lower the stream quality. Our speed guide explains what each quality needs.
